Chopta is known as Mini Switzerland due to its freezing temperature in winter located at an altitude of 2600 mts above the sea level with Vibrant view of Himalayas peaks like Trishul, Nanda Devi , Chaukhamba It’s also connect with wild life sanctuary of Kedarnath.
Chopta is the initiation point of the trek to famous Tungnath Mandir (one of the Panch-Kedars) and summit Chandrashilla. The region is rich in varied flora and fauna, with plenty of Rhododendron and deodar trees all around.
Tunganath
The sacred Tungnath temple at an altitude of 3,680 metres atop Chandranath Parbat is the highest shrine among the Panch Kedars and marks the site where the arm of Lord Shiva appeared. The magnificent temple with a 16 door dome enshrines a Shivalinga and an idol of Adi Guru Shankaracharya. The temple of Nanda Devi is another important shrine at Tungnath. The peak of Tungnath is considered to be very sacred as it is the source of three springs which form the river Akashkamini. The site of amazing Akashlinga waterfall is truly spectacular, as it seems to descending directly from heaven. The shrine of Tungnath closes during the winters and the priests move to Mukunath, about 19 kms.
Chandrashila
The shrine of Chandrashila or the moon mountain’ is another worth visiting site near Tungnath. The beautiful trek to Chandrashila passes through scenic surroundings and takes about 1 hour from the temple
Deoria Tal
A side trip can be taken to a beautiful lake called Deoria Situated at a height of 2200 mtr, the lake is surrounded by green forests. The majestic Chaukhamba peak reflecting in the crystal clear waters looks at arms reach. The first 7 km up to Sari village can be covered by motor and the remaining 3 km has to be trekked.
